Mentoring: Knowledge transfer in the company and at the racetrack

Experience and expert knowledge are driving forces for Schaeffler’s entrepreneurial success. Mentoring is an approach, safeguarded by Schaeffler, for passing on knowledge within the company and nurturing new talents. As of 2021, Schaeffler has used this successful model for motorsport as well. Marco Wittmann and Carrie Schreiner are the first two people to take part in the mentoring programme at the racetrack.

Pioneering spirit characterises employees and company

A pioneering spirit and innovation have made Schaeffler a leading global automobile and industrial supplier. These two values are characteristic of the company and the 83,900 employees who, in roughly 200 locations in more than 50 countries, contribute to expanding Schaeffler’s role as pioneer and innovation leader in the future. This is highlighted by the countless patents that Schaeffler employees register year after year; they registered no fewer than 1,875 in 2020.

Schaeffler starts mentoring programme for female students

It is even more important to pass on the knowledge and expertise of employees. For example, this allows colleagues in other areas, those just starting their job and trainees to benefit from the wealth of experience. One way Schaeffler achieves this is through mentoring.

As of 2021, in a pilot project, Schaeffler is specifically helping female students with their professional and personal development. As part of the mentoring programme, 40 female students will be monitored and guided by mentors from the company for a whole year. The project is aimed at female students of STEM subjects in particular, meaning those focussing on mathematics, information technology, science and technology. The mentee and the advisor agree among themselves how closely they will work together and what goals they will set for their year together.

Mentoring project in motorsport

In 2021, Schaeffler is bringing to the racetrack what has been working for a long time in the company. After all, this is where the next generation of racing drivers can benefit from the experience and knowledge of a driver as successful as Marco Wittmann.

Which is why the Schaeffler brand ambassador will act as mentor for Carrie Schreiner this season. She will contest the BMW M2 Cup, which will be held as part of the DTM. Ahead of each race the pair will sit down together, share their experiences and pass on tips and tricks for future races.

The mentoring programme agenda of two-time DTM champion Wittmann and Carrie Schreiner, who is involved in the further development of the steer-by-wire system Space Drive for Schaeffler, also includes higher-level topics such as mental preparation for races, teamwork and much more. Carrie Schreiner says: “I am really looking forward to working with Marco Wittmann. As a DTM champion and long-term BMW works driver, I will benefit greatly from his experience and know-how!”
